Minimum Wage Increase: The minimum wages in China have been increased again. Because there are designated economic zones, in China the level of rate changes are different in various cities and provinces. The minimum monthly wage increase in Shenzhen is just under 16%, Beijing is 8.5% and the highest increase so far is in Sichuan province at 23.4 %. China’s five year plan calls for raises of a minimum of 13% per year, however, the plan is being criticized by local business owners.
Energy from Methane Gas: A source of energy is the use of methane gas generated by biodegradation of waste material in landfills. The methane is used as fuel to power turbines, which are used to generate electricity. This energy source is currently providing electrical power to communities and helping reduce GHG emissions from fossil fired power plants. Modern landfill technology has replaced the old “dump site” with managed and controlled waste handling, which collects and “taps” the generated methane gas. This energy source is an added element in the “life-cycle” analysis of biodegradable materials, such as, paper packaging, yard and food waste. Biodegradable, renewable and compostable packaging products contribute significantly, in many ways, to the concepts of global sustainability.
