DeSoto, Kansas-based Huhtamaki North America, a business unit of Finland-based packaging producer Huhtamaki Group, has joined the Paper Stock Industries (PSI) chapter of the Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI).

“We are committed to making packaging more circular, and we embed sustainability in everything we do,” the company has stated upon joining PSI. Huhtamaki says, as one example, its Chinet Classic White molded fiber plates and bowls are made from 100 percent pre-consumer recycled materials.

The company also says it has a sustainability program named Packaging for Good that focuses on “the four priorities of people, packaging, supply chain and operations.” Huhtamaki also has adopted 11 of the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals, saying it is putting a focus on the goal of “Responsible Consumption & Production” because “there we can have the biggest positive impact through our core business.”

Huhtamaki Group operates in 35 countries and 81 sites around the world, employing some 18,600 people.
