Honoring Paul Carter: An IMFA Fellow

A Career That Helped Shape Modern Molded Fiber

The IMFA Fellow Award honors individuals whose leadership, technical expertise, and long-term service have made an indelible impact on the molded fiber industry and the IMFA community. It recognizes those whose contributions extend beyond their own organizations and help shape the broader industry.

This year, IMFA proudly recognizes Paul Carter as a Fellow.

From Early Innovation to Global Expansion

Paul’s career spans more than four decades across pulp, paper, and molded fiber, reflecting a lifelong commitment to technical leadership, innovation, and operational excellence. After earning his degree in Pulp and Paper Science and Engineering in 1978, he began his career with US Gypsum and Caraustar, where he developed deep experience in process engineering, capital projects, and plant operations.

He later transitioned into molded fiber, joining Keyes Fibre in Maine and becoming part of a team that would eventually evolve into Huhtamaki. During this time, Paul contributed to the development of Chinet, helping advance molded fiber products and processes that were ahead of their time and continue to influence the industry today.

Building the Foundation for What Came Next

In the early stages of molded fiber innovation, much of the work required building systems and capabilities that did not yet exist. Paul played a key role in leading multidisciplinary engineering teams responsible for designing equipment in-house and implementing those systems across operations. His focus on improving machine productivity led to significant advancements in speed, efficiency, and finishing capabilities, helping move molded fiber manufacturing forward.

In 1996, Paul relocated to Norway to serve as Managing Director for Chinet Europe, where he oversaw both manufacturing and administrative operations. In this role, he helped expand molded fiber production across Europe while maintaining consistent quality and operational performance.

A Lasting Legacy on IMFA and the Industry

Paul later returned to North America and spent the final 20 years of his career with Huhtamaki, leading advancements in operations, continuous improvement, product stewardship, and molded fiber technology before retiring in 2021.

His influence extends well beyond his professional roles. Since becoming involved with IMFA in 2006, Paul has been one of the association’s most consistent and impactful contributors. He was part of the inaugural Board of Advisors in 2010 and joined the Board of Directors at its inception in 2014. In recent years, he has helped guide conference programming and strategic direction, serving as Conference Planning Chair and as a member of the Executive Committee.

He is known not only for his technical expertise but also for his ability to bring people together. Through mentoring, collaboration, and leadership, he has helped strengthen both the industry and the community that supports it.

An Enduring Influence & Impact

Paul’s impact is reflected not only in the advancements he helped drive but also in the people he has mentored and the industry he helped shape. That kind of influence endures, making this recognition both fitting and well-earned.
